Poetry

Since winning a Scholastic Gold Key for their poetry in 2018, Alex has fallen only further in love with the art form, both on the page as well as on the stage. They completed their first poetry mentorship, Telling It Bent, with The Frank Theatre in 2020, and have continued to write since. They find poetry to be invaluable for expression, healing, and connection, and owe much of who they are as a creative to the Vancouver poetry scene.

Alex has also contributed to the scene, as well, beyond performances an publications: they were a founding member of SFU We Were Here, We Were Queer, a literary arts zine devoted to highlighting the skills and achievementsof queer SFU and FIC students. They’re also a member of Flaming Balloon Collective, a local multimedia poetry group that’s collaborated with IGNITE! Youth Festival, The Roundhouse, and more, which has allowed them to explore combining poetry with musical composition, projection art, and more. Additionally, most recently, they expanded into teaching poetry, leading a spoken word workshop at Realwheels’ Freewheeling Arts Festival.

The subject matter of Alex’s poetry varies, but common themes include queerness, neurodivergence, nature, and recovery from trauma.
